Bulgaria’s Prohodna Cave Is Nicknamed “Eyes of God” For A Good Reason

This natural wonder offers admirable views and fun activities for visitors.

  • The Prohodna Cave is one of the most frequented tourist spots in Bulgaria.
  • It has been given the nickname “The Eyes of God” because of its two massive eye-like holes.
  • The cave offers visitors with fun activities including hiking, rock climbing, and bungee jumping.

Have you ever seen the “Eyes of God”? If you’ve been to this famous Bulgarian destination, you can say you have.

We are, of course, talking about one of the most popular tourist spots in the country – the Prohodna Cave. Located in Iskar Gorge near the Karlukovo village in the province of Lovech, the cave has become known through its nickname “Eyes of God” because of the two huge naturally-formed circles on the ceiling.

The “Eyes of God”

According to the Bulgaria Travel website:

“It is not by chance that local people sometimes refer to them as The Eyes of God. Seen from a specific angle, they even resemble a face that looks down, and when it is wet it seems as if they are ‘crying’. People who witness this natural phenomenon are astonished and a little excited – the incredible symmetry and location of the cave holes fill one with awe and a sense of mystique.”

Bulgaria’s Longest Cave Passage

Prohodna measures 860 feet in length and has two entrances, with one each at both ends namely the Small Entrance (which measures 115 feet high) and the Big Entrance (139 or 148 feet high).

Fun Things To Do in Prohodna

Tourists flock to Prohodna not only to admire the cave’s unique beauty but also for other activities – such as hiking, rock climbing, and of course, bungee jumping. It’s truly a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Getting There

Going to Prohodna is also easy as it is fairly accessible. The Bulgaria Travel website tells us that the cave lies “2 km away from Karlukovo Village, on the road to Lukovit” with the road junction “leading to a car park at the small entrance of the cave.”

So yes, if you are ever headed to Bulgaria anytime soon, Prohodna Cave is one place you should definitely check out.
