Disabled Student Transforms His Wheelchair Into Epic Mad Max Cosplay

Wheelchair-bound? No problem. Cosplay Convention? Got it covered!

Cosplay Convention? No problem. Wheelchair-bound? Got it covered!

It is very rare to see the words “paraplegic” and “cosplay” in one sentence, but for this college student, his condition and his love for cosplay made for an explosive combination.

Ben Carpenter is a University of Central Florida student who was born with spinal muscular atrophy. Himself a miracle after having survived the high infant mortality rate for someone born with this condition, Ben is currently an engineering major who has managed to get to and from his classes on a wheelchair.

Meet Ben Carpenter, 20 years old.

Ben is also a cosplay fan, and has never let his disability hinder his love for the art, as photos from his Instagram account prove.

As Jared Leto’s Joker from “Suicide Squad.” But we digress, moving on…

When the Tampa Bay ComicCon rolled to his part of town last month, Ben knew he had to be there dressed in his finest, most creative costume.

Being a paraplegic, Ben knew he had to come up with something ingenious, but also recent enough to be recognized in pop culture. So he took his welding machine, and some materials he had on hand…

…and created himself a kickass costume…

…as well as a humongous kickass prop…

The genius behind Ben’s getup is he created the costume to go with his souped-up wheelchair, making it appear he was strapped to it ala Tom Hardy in the movie.

If you’re not familiar with it (whether you hate watching movies, or live under a rock), Ben just turned himself into Mad Max, from George Miller’s 2015 post-apocalyptic film, “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

Ben even wore Hardy’s ferocious expression to take to the ComicCon with him…

Grrrr…

Grrrr…
