9 Odd Things You Only See In Chinese Homes

If you plan to travel to China, this might just give you a heads up.

China is one of the most successful countries in the world. In fact, the country’s prowess is now arguably on par with the United States. While it is infamous for a lot of things, there are still reasons for people to love it. Otherwise, it would not be considered a tourist hotspot.

Just like every county on this planet, China has its own ways of living. The families there are still very much acquainted with the archaic Chinese way of life. And if you are a tourist visiting the country, you would find it a bit bizarre how the people live their lives there.

We here at Elite Readers want to feature the things every Chinese family do in their household. And there is no doubt they handle things very differently. So, without further ado, here they are!

#9. They Rarely Invite Guests

Yes, that is right. Chinese are not really into social gatherings (not saying it in a way of generalization). They are not just fond of inviting guests to their homes. But if they do, they prefer to do it in a local restaurant. There is actually a reason behind it. According to Chinese tradition, it is the inviter who always pays for everyone. So whenever there is an event or celebration, expect the inviter to cover the entire costs.

#8. Most Homes Do Not Have a Toilet and Shower

It is true that China has a lot of multi-unit apartment buildings. Mostly, however, are just one-story houses. The interiors are simple, but there are two things people there considered obligatory. First, there must be characters written on the door wishing “Good luck;” and second, there must be a portrait of Mao Zedong. While most rarely have toilets, others have but are placed outside. As a matter of fact, most people there take their showers at work.

#7. If There Is a Bathroom, a Toilet is Unlikely to be There

Like every Asian country, Chinese families are satisfied with having only a bathroom. They do not necessarily need a shower or something. They are already satisfied with a pail. And if you expect a toilet to be there, you will only be disappointed.

#6. Kitchens Are Built Small

Actually, it can be deemed tiny. They make sure that space is just enough to accommodate a sink, a stove, and some drawers. Heck, there is even no central gas supply. They just keep cylinders with bottled gas to use for cooking.

#5. Lodging is Quite Expensive

Believe it or not, you are likely to spend between $150 and $200 per month for a rental fee. The most expensive is considered to be around $300, but the diversity of the prices offered is just huge. At Shanghai, small rooms cost around $600 per month. If you are looking for a decent apartment, you must be ready to spend $2,500 to $3,000 per month.

#4. New Houses Have No Window Frames

New houses sold to interested buyers are with no windows and frames. If you buy one, you will have to set the windows yourself. Others even improvise just so they can save money but at the cost of quality and decency.

#3. Windows and Balconies Are Always Barred

And this is regardless of the floor. For the Chinese, the bars are set not for the thieves. Instead, they are there to prevent children from falling. Interestingly, though, the residential complex has their own security and gates.

#2. No Central Heating System

The Chinese opt for electrical heaters instead. You will often see families owning an electrical healing lamp installed on the ceiling.

#1. Heating in the Houses Is Zero

This is quite ironic considering that China has winter. The Chinese simply do not care about it. They seem to be comfortable already. If the cold weather arrives, they just stay in their homes and wear thick clothing.
