Thousands Attend Massive Outdoor Concert In New Zealand

"Being able to get together while the rest of the world basically can't has really given us a good appreciation of how well our country has done in managing coronavirus."

  • Thousands of concertgoers attended the Six60 Saturdays concert held at Waitangi last January 16.
  • Band frontman Matiu Walters expressed appreciation about how the country managed the pandemic.
  • So far, New Zealand has very few active coronavirus cases, thanks to their “very systematic” response to the crisis.

New Zealand just held its largest concert since the pandemic started. The outdoor event was attended by thousands, showing the world another proof that the country has coronavirus under control.

Held at Waitangi Sports Grounds, the Six60 Saturdays kicked off the six-date tour that also brings the band to Hastings, New Plymouth, Christchurch, Wellington, and Hamilton.

A concert in the middle of a global pandemic? Yes, it’s possible in New Zealand.
Naturally, the band “feels really proud” about it.

Six60 frontman Matiu Walters told the media:

“Being here and able to get together while the rest of the world basically can’t has really given us a good appreciation of how well our country has done in managing coronavirus and just how lucky we are. I feel really proud that we have got our act together so well on coronavirus.”

Overall, the country only has 76 active Covid-19 cases and a total of 2,246 confirmed infections as of January 15.

New Zealand has often been praised for its brilliant handling of the pandemic.

Case in point, the World Health Organization (WHO) Health Emergencies Programme executive director Dr. Michael Ryan previously said:

“I think of countries like New Zealand who have really done the lot and they’ve gone from public health measures to a very graded response to very systematic case finding and contact tracing to a high rate of testing.

“When all of those factors have been put together, the disease tends to be more controllable.”

Well done, New Zealand!

As Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has earlier shared:

“It’s not just whether you have cases, it’s how you choose to deal with them as a nation, and I am personally very proud of how New Zealanders have taken to the battle with Covid-19.”
