Man Spends Four Years Growing an Enchanting Church from Trees

Through his travels abroad, New Zealander Barry Cox developed his fascination for architecture and design of churches. This interest inspired him to create a living, breathing church using a wide variety of trees.

To pull this off, Cox tapped the help of his own gardening company Treelocations, which transports living trees using a mechanical tree spade, to relocate saplings onto his property. This allowed him to replant a wide variety of trees any way he wanted in order to complete his church.

Trees with stone-colored trunks were used by Cox for the walls of the church. For the roof, Cox used trees with sparse-foliage to provide visitors with a natural light source.

Speaking to Stuff, the tree architect  said: “I walked out my back door one day and thought, ‘That space needs a church.”

“And so it began. I cleared the area in April 2011 and made the iron frame, drawing on all the research I had done over the years of studying churches. I wanted the roof and the walls to be distinctly different, to highlight the proportions, just like masonry churches.”
