“This will cause more wrecks. Dumbest idea ever,” a commenter said.
While roundabouts are pretty common in the United Kingdom and Europe, it looks like some Americans are having a hard time figuring it out. As seen in a viral video, drivers in the US found it difficult to understand how the circular intersection exactly works.
The aerial footage shared by Walker Construction reveals how the roundabout has been a source of confusion for motorists in the Rowan County, Kentucky area. According to the company, they posted the video online hoping it would help educate people about the improper way of using the road circle.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet explained in a statement:
“The existing four-way-stop intersection at KY 801 has a history of high-speed, T-bone (right angle), and other types of severe crashes. An engineering study showed a roundabout-style traffic flow would be the most viable safety alternative because merging traffic promotes slow speeds and decreases the number of places where traffic crosses paths – as compared to right-angle crossings at signals or stop signs – thereby helping to reduce severe crashes.”
Unfortunately, the roundabout gained mixed reactions from drivers and some were even very vocal about saying it’s a terrible idea.
“I’m sure that it’s going to take them a while to get used to it, but once they get used to it, I’m sure it’s going to work very well,” one motorist said.
Meanwhile, someone wrote on Facebook:
“Hope no one gets killed trying to get to the dollar general. Seems a little confusing.”
