Johnny Depp Fired As Captain Jack Sparrow In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’ Reboot

Disney may have dropped the troubled actor due to recent controversies.

You will always remember this as the day you finally caught Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp has reportedly been dropped from the new Pirates of the Caribbean reboot. It looks like Disney might be planning to recast the role or simply move forward with completely new characters.

Depp has played the eccentric pirate in the fantasy swashbuckler films starting with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003. His portrayal of Captain Jack was immediately iconic and spawned four sequels. However, it looks like Disney has decided to fire Depp amidst financial woes and controversies surrounding the actor.

Screenwriter Stuart Beattie was the first to confirm Depp’s removal from the franchise. The Curse of the Black Pearl writer somehow admitted that the Murder on the Orient Express star will not return in the reboot.

“I think he’s had a great run. Obviously, he’s made that character his own and it’s become the character he’s most famous for now. And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think it’s been great for him, it’s been great for us, so I’m just very, very happy about it.”

Beattie added that “Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. It’s the only character he’s played five times, it’s the character he dresses up in to visit children in hospitals, it’s what he’ll be remembered for.”

Depp has joined the Harry Potter franchise as the titular villain in Fantastic Beasts 2.

This is certainly heartbreaking news for fans who were hoping to see Johnny Depp reprise the iconic role one more time. It was initially believed that Jack Sparrow will return for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film. However, Disney has since hired Deadpool 2 writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to work on the franchise’s reboot.

Although he is no longer a part of Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp continues to be busy. He will appear as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald this November.
