Indian Man Walks 10 Kilometers While Carrying His Dead Wife’s Body

Dana Majhi of Odisha, India — whose wife had just died — had no choice but to carry her remains back to their home because there was no vehicle available.

Dana Majhi and his family suffered a tragedy. Majhi’s wife Amang Dei, 42, died from complications due to tuberculosis at a government hospital in the neighborhood of Bhawanipatna in Odisha, India’s Kalahandi district.

The following morning, Majhi began to make inquiries on how he could bring his wife’s remains back to their tribe’s village in Melghara. The remote village is said to be located in the Rampur block, which happens to be 60 kilometers away from the hospital in Bhawanipatna.

Dana Mahji's 12-year-old daughter weeps.

The New Indian Express explained that the government normally assists in transporting bodies from hospitals to the residences of the deceased. Unfortunately, Majhi was allegedly unable to get any help from the hospital authorities.

Thus, Mahji, already frustrated with not getting any assistance, literally took matters into his own hands. He wrapped his wife’s body with a cloth and carried her out of the hospital. His 12-year-old daughter was with him.

Majhi and his daughter slowly made their way to their village, resting by the roadside from time to time. Fortunately, some local reporters spotted them and called up the District Collector. The reporters asked for an ambulance to be sent to help Majhi.

Thankfully, the ambulance came and Majhi and his daughter didn’t have to walk 50 kilometers more.

Many people were moved by Majhi’s story. Indeed, as The Indian Express reported that Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa — the prime minister of Bahrain — was reportedly heartbroken when he read about Majhi’s sad journey that he offered monetary aid for him.

As a matter of fact, the Bahrain prime minister’s office has already contacted their embassy in India to make arrangements for the financial assistance for Mahji and his family. The reports, however, didn’t mention the exact amount involved in the monetary aid.

Then again, whatever the amount may be, the kind gesture will surely be appreciated by the grieving family.
