“Hey Siri, I’m Getting Pulled Over”, iPhone Shortcut Auto Records Police Interactions

"I just wanted a way for anyone to have proof of their version of events in the unlikely scenario that something unexpected happens during a police interaction," creator Robert Petersen said.

  • Redditor Robert Petersen created the “Police” shortcut in 2018.
  • However, the shortcut only gained popularity recently due to the rising cases of police brutality.
  • By saying, “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over”, Siri would automatically record your conversation with the police.

The “I’m being pulled over” shortcut in iPhone is gaining popularity nowadays. The use of this technology is amid the widespread protests of Americans over police brutality cases in the country.

Redditor Robert Petersen created the “Police” shortcut in 2018. He then updated and fixed any possible bugs at the height of Black Lives Matter protests.

“I just wanted a way for anyone to have proof of their version of events in the unlikely scenario that something unexpected happens during a police interaction,” Petersen said in a CNN report.

How does it work?

By saying “Hey Siri, I’m getting pulled over”, the iPhone will automatically pause any activities on your phone, turn down the brightness of your device and activate the “Do Not Disturb” mode. This mode will block all incoming calls.

It will then automatically open your front-facing camera and start recording. It will also send a message to your preassigned contact to let them know about your current location.

As soon as you hit stop on the recording, it will send a copy of your video to your preassigned contact. Plus you also have an option to save a copy to your iCloud or Dropbox.

When Petersen launched the shortcut, it caught attention from iPhone users. However, it garnered more traction on social media due to the overwhelming call for police reform.

The clamor happened when George Floyd died in Minneapolis under police custody. Policeman Derek Chauvin knelt down on Floyd’s neck despite the latter’s plea that he “can’t breathe.”

Floyd’s death sparked outraged and protests across the United States.

A TikTok user posted about how to use shortcut called “I’m being pulled over”.
How do we download it?

Here are the steps:

First, download the “Shortcuts” app on your iPhone.

Secondly, you have to run another shortcut in the Shortcuts app. Tap the word “Gallery” on the bottom right hand side where you will see other shortcuts you can use.

Next, go to settings and look for “Shortcuts” and tap it. Turn on the “Allow Untrusted Shortcuts” button. Open the link in Safari to download the application named “I’m getting pulled over” shortcut. Select “Get Shortcut”.

Once the Shortcut is open, scroll down and click on “Add Untrusted Shortcut”.

Lastly, choose a contact(s) from your phonebook then click the done button.

“And if 1 in 10,000 people find my shortcut useful at all I’d be glad,” Petersen added.
