You May Not Realize It, But These 8 Habits Will Certainly Make You Unhappy!

What really makes people unhappy?

Unhappiness comes in different shades of gray. If you are unhappy, that simply means you have some negative habits that makes you an unhappy person. Nothing else! Unhappiness depends on your state of mind.

There are people who always seems unhappy in all kind of situations. Their minds are set to interpret anything into unhappiness. If you tell them about the beauty of a rose, they will quickly start counting the thorns. Quite the opposite if the same thing is viewed from the perspective of a positive person, it’s a miracle that such a pretty delicate flower is possible among so many thorns.

What really makes people unhappy?

Here’s the 8 most vicious habits that makes normal people unhappy.

1. Being Perfectionist

“In order to go on living one must try to escape the death involved in perfectionism.” – Hannah Arendt

Everything about your life doesn’t have to be perfect in order for you to be happy. So simple right? Yet so many people failed to realize that. If you focus on the imperfections of your life, you will wind up setting unattainable goals and your self confidence will seriously suffer because of it.

2. Comparing Your Life To Others

“Saying someone is ugly doesn’t make you any prettier.”

This is possibly the most common of all the bad habits listed here and probably the most destructive as well. Have you ever felt envious when you saw your friends posting photos about their vacations and humble-bragging about their ‘achievements’ on Facebook? Envy is a primary reason why you tend to compare yourself, your assets, and your relationships to others. This bad habit create many negative feelings and thoughts. If you want to be happy, turn your ENVY into INSPIRATION.

3. You’re happy only when all of your dreams come true.

“Happiness is not determined by what’s happening around you, but rather what’s happening inside you. Most people depend on others to gain happiness, but the truth is, it always comes from within.”

Who is happier, the person who decides, “I will be happy when I make a hundred million dollars,” or someone who believes, “I will be happy with a great dinner and time with my family?” Having lofty goals are great. But when you tie your happiness to future successes that may or may not happen, you never find joy in the life you live today.

4. Living in the past

“You can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading your last one.”

Many people become the product of their pasts. They are the victims of regret, sorrow, and what ifs. While we can all learn from our past, staying there is not practical if you want to live in the present. The past can’t be changed or relived. To constantly dwell on it will definitely make you unhappy.

5. You worry.

“I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never happened.” – Mark Twain

Worry creates inner conflicts. It’s like a rocking chair moving relentlessly, but going nowhere. Worrying doesn’t solve anything, it freezes you so you are unable to think clearly and make changes to avoid the negative outcomes that you fear. Your energy would be better utilized in changing things that you can control, and letting the rest go. Bobby McFerrin sang it simply enough, “Don’t worry! Be Happy!” The lack of worry can certainly create happiness!

6. You believe everyone should play by your rules.

“If you expect the world to be fair with you because you are fair, you’re fooling yourself. That’s like expecting the lion not to eat you because you didn’t eat him.”

The world doesn’t revolves around you and people doesn’t live by your rule book. The sooner you accept that, the happier you will be. Trying to make people conform to your ideals will only cause your frustrations. Accept people as they are and appreciate the colourful spectrum of ideas and viewpoints.

7. You are a materialistic person

“Many people are so poor because the only thing they have is money.”

While wealth is certainly a great gain in this life, it doesn’t really bring happiness. Just imagine how you’d feel if tomorrow is your last. Would you really strive to make more money, or would your focus turn to spending time with people you care and share life experiences with them. If you live by your values, you will find more fulfilment than materialism could ever bring.

8. You care too much about what others think.

“We buy things we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like.”

Once you finally accept the reality that you can’t please everyone, your life gets so much easier. In fact, trying to please everyone will simply drain your energy and make you frustrated. There is no reason to exist with other people’s opinions and thoughts whispering in your ear. Break free from trying to please anyone and learn to live your own life.

It’s important to remember that happiness does not happen overnight. It took years for you to grow unhappy and you can’t just erase that by flipping a switch or taking a magic pill. Get rid of these habits and set some challenging yet realistic goals for yourself.

“It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness.” – Charles Spurgeon
