Global Covid-19 Cases Surpass 100 Million

"The pandemic is far from over," said Pres. Xi Jinping of China.

  • Johns Hopkins University has reported that confirmed coronavirus cases has reached 100 million globally.
  • This is based on the data gathered as of January 26.
  • World leaders are urging the public to continue observing health measures and to take advantage of vaccination programs as they become available.

The global number of confirmed coronavirus cases has officially exceeded 100 million, according to the data compiled by the Johns Hopkins University. The grim milestone has been reached on Tuesday, January 26 – more than a year after the outbreak was first detected in Wuhan, China.

Looking at past statistics, confirmed cases only reached 50 million last November and it has since doubled in less than 3 months. Meanwhile, Covid-19 deaths has already surpassed 2.1 million across the world.

As of this writing, the United States remains as the country with the most number of total cases at over 26 million and more than 435,000 deaths.

In his recent inauguration, President Joe Biden spoke about improving the government’s Covid response, especially regarding the vaccine program rollout.

Biden said:

“This is a war-time undertaking. It’s not hyperbole… We’re going to be working across the government, with private industry, to ramp up production of vaccine and protective equipment — the syringes, the needles, the gloves, the swabs, and the masks — everything that’s needed to protect, test, vaccinate, and take care of our people. Well, we’ve already identified suppliers, and we’re working with them to move our plan forward.”

During his speech at the Davos Agenda Summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping remarked:

”(The past year) bore witness to the enormous resolve and courage of people around the world in battling the deadly coronavirus. Guided by science, reason, and a humanitarian spirit, the world has achieved initial progress in fighting Covid-19.

”That said, the pandemic is far from over. The recent resurgence of Covid cases reminds us that we must carry on the fight. Yet we remain convinced that winter cannot stop the arrival of spring and darkness can never shroud the light of dawn. There is no doubt that humanity will prevail over the virus and emerge even stronger from this disaster.”

Meanwhile, World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized that governments, vaccine manufacturers, and the global community should take immediate action.

”My request to all countries is to act in solidarity,” he said. ”Only by working together can we bring this pandemic to an end.”
