Germany Implements Stricter Mask Rules To Slow Covid Spread

Can tighter measures slow the virus' spread?

  • Germany is expected to implement stricter mask rules and extend its lockdown soon.
  • Authorities are hoping to slow down the spread of Covid-19 through tighter restrictions.
  • Meanwhile, Chancellor Angela Merkel is encouraging the public to patiently wait for the upcoming vaccine rollout.

In an attempt to slow down the spread of coronavirus, Germany is expected to implement stricter mask wearing rules soon. According to reports, people visiting shops and taking public transportation, such as buses and trains, will be required to wear masks.

Under the new policy, travelers and shoppers will have to wear medical masks and FFP2 types. Other masks such as fabrics and scarves will no longer be allowed.

Reports are likewise indicating that German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the 16 state leaders intend to extend the lockdown to February 14 – which means bars, cafes, museums, restaurants, schools, and many other businesses and establishments will stay closed.

As of this writing, Germany is one of the latest countries to discover a new Covid mutation, along with a new variant detected among several hospital patients in Bavaria. Officials are now hoping to contain the situation before things get worse.

In a media conference, Charité University Hospital deputy medical director Clemens Stockklausner shared:

“At the moment we have discovered a small point mutation … and it is absolutely not clear whether it will be of clinical relevance. We have to wait for the complete sequencing.”

Meanwhile, Merkel urged those criticizing the slow roll out of the Covid vaccine to simply wait and stop complaining.

“I understand the impatience,” she said. “There is no reason whatsoever to criticize BioNTech. Those are people who work day and night … and we are benefiting from this. How can we even complain?”
