Floyd Mayweather Jr. Offers to Pay for George Floyd’s Funeral

"He is just doing what he feels is right in his heart."

  • World boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. is once again helping a family beset by tragedy.
  • According to the people closest to him, the 43-year-old boxer is paying for the funeral expenses of George Floyd because it “feels right.”
  • Aside from Mayweather, other popular names in the sports industry have shown their support to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, prompted by Floyd’s death.

Five-division world-boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr “is definitely paying” for all four of George Floyd’s funerals staged all over the country, says Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. According to a report, Mayweather decided to reach out to Floyd’s family after he found out that Anzel Jennings, the CEO of Mayweather’s music label, grew up with Floyd in Houston.

“He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, he [Mayweather] is definitely paying for the funeral,” Ellerbe confirmed. He also said that Mayweather likes to keep the details under wraps, and “is just doing what he feels is right in his heart.”

The family has reportedly accepted the offer, so Mayweather is all set to pay for all four memorial services in Floyd’s honor. The services will take place in Houston, Minnesota, Charlotte, and in another unnamed location. Reports also added that if the family organizes another memorial service, Mayweather will cover those expenses as well.

Ellerbe shared that this is not the first time the boxing champion stepped in to support families struck by tragedies. According to him, “Floyd [Mayweather] has done these kinds of things over the last 20 years.”

The CEO of Hollywood Unlocked, Jason Lee, shared Mayweather is “distraught” with Chauvin’s charges, so he felt that this story needs to be out there “because his [Mayweather’s] voice has a global impact that needs to be heard,” Lee said.

George Floyd died in Powderhorn, a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, with a white police officer named Derek Chauvin kneeling on his neck. Chauvin has long been relieved of his duties, but Floyd’s death continues to spark widespread protests all over the United States and across the world.

Other celebrities have also shown their support to Floyd’s family, even as civil unrest gain traction across the US.

Here’s Michael Jordan sharing his thoughts on social media:

Michael Jordan, Paul Pogba, Marcus Rashford, and Lewis Hamilton showed their support to the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement. Jurgen Klopp’s squad knelt around the center circle at Anfield, while some posted social media photos of solidarity with the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter.

England footballer Jadon Sancho revealed a ‘Justice for Floyd’ shirt.

Lewis Hamilton lambasted fellow F1 drivers for being silent about Floyd’s death.
After Hamilton’s post, David Ricciardo posted this on Instagram.
Marcus Thuram took a knee for ‘Black Lives Matter’ solidarity after scoring for Borussia Monchengladbach.
