Filipino Boatman Arrested For Raping 2 Tourists During Island Camping Trip in El Nido

He was a crew member of the boat that the victims boarded.

A 30-year-old boatman from the Philippines got arrested after he allegedly raped a Slovakian tourist and attempting to do it again with another tourist in El Nido, Palawan. The reports identified the man as Romulo Arnosa and charged with rape and attempted rape by the island’s local police.

Arnosa was a crew member of the boat that the Slovakian victims boarded. The victims were 26 and 28 years old and they were with their fiances. Rodel Lota, El Nido’s police chief inspector, said that the incident happened while the women and their companions were camping on Cadlao Island.

The picturesque Caldao Island, in front of the peaceful town of El Nido.

They were drinking and Arnosa reportedly took advantage of the women’s drunken state. Also, their fiances were nowhere to be found during the incident.

The victims were able to report to the police, which led to Arnosa’s quick arrest. He is currently detained at the Palawan Provincial Jail (PPJ). He is already scheduled to make an appearance in court.

The women were given aid and counseling by Palawan’s provincial government.

El Nido is one of the most popular tourist havens in the Philippines.

It is located in the Northern part of Palawan, home to the Underground River, which became one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature.

Palawan is dubbed as The Last Frontier of the Philippines. Its white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, and towering cliffs draws thousands of tourists every year.

It has become one of the favorite destinations of backpackers from all over the world.

Before this incident, there are little or no known cases of violence against tourists in the island. El Nido, as well as the other tourist spots in Palawan (such as Coron and Puerta Princesa) are considered safe for visitors. Palawan has drawn raves internationally, with French oceanographer Jacques Cousteau described it as the most beautiful place he has ever explored.

According to the Telegraph, “Palawan has been voted the best island on Earth by readers of Travel + Leisure, one of America’s most influential travel magazines – and has been chosen as the backdrop to Hollywood films including The World is Not Enough and The Bourne Legacy.”
