Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. These powerful words have truly greatly influenced Karen who has proven that even love can defy gravity.

It was merely years ago when Karen and her 62-year-old boyfriend named Eric Moger decided to finally tie the knot. However, the planned union needed to take the back seat as Eric’s condition worsened. Although Moger never failed to have his series of operations for what was believed to be Nasal Polyps, it was only after six years when he was diagnosed with a more dangerous rare condition—He is positive with advanced Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Lovely couple Karen and Eric had to hold their long-dream wedding as Eric faces one of the darkest chapters in his life.

As experts say, this rare disease is only a one-in-a-million among the usual cases of skin cancer and is usually detected at an early age. However, for Moger’s case, this may be a little too late as the polyps had already abnormally progressed causing it to be a tumor as big as a tennis ball nesting inside his nose.

Infected with Squamous Cell Carcinoma, surgeons had no choice but to extract the tennis-ball-sized tumor affecting his left eye, cheeckbone and jaw.

Although Moger is now a cancer survivor, the extraction of his tumor cost him majority of the left side of his face particularly his left eye, cheek bone and jaw making it difficult for him to speak clearly and drink normally. These deformations drowned him in the cloak of depression and seclusion for almost four years. Thankfully, his guesting in a British reality show called “Embarrassing Bodies” paved way to restoration where he met Dr. Christian Jessen who later referred them to dental surgeon Andrew Dawood.

After series of consecutive operations, finally, Eric gets back the life believed to be stolen from him.

Being an expert with 3D scanning technology, Dr. Dawood designed a prosthetic mask and had it 3D-printed to build a nylon prosthetic mold which was later on filled with silicone for a more convenient usage. In order to bring back the life stolen from Moger, Dr. Dawood added a scaffold that would bind the mask within the cavity of his face and implanted a mouth that would normalize his eating, drinking and speaking habits. Today, Moger is living his long-dream married life and continues close monitoring relative to his condition.

With the rising number of deaths caused by cancer or what is popularly known as the big C, being inflicted with it used to be taboo. Today, however, marks not only a new era of medical advancement but also a life that comes with freedom—freedom from fear and freedom from pain. With the close-knit union between science and technology, one could only hope that science continues to bring hope to humanity and that the divine intervention continue to promulgate even upon the absence of scientific explanation.
