New Research Could Mean We’re Finally Close to Finding a Cure for Eczema

Scientists have discovered the root cause of the skin condition after years and years of research.

For years, scientists and researchers have been trying to find out what triggers eczema. And for years, people suffering from this common skin condition have only been given creams to relieve its irritating symptoms (red, cracked, and itchy skin). But today, we could actually be one step closer to finally developing a cure for eczema.

New research from Newcastle University has determined the root cause of the problem, and this discovery brings hope of an eventual cure. According to the findings of the study, which was published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, those suffering from eczema are missing a vital protein called filaggrin in their skin. This then causes the development of the troublesome skin condition.

According to lead author Professor Nick Reynolds, as reported in the Daily Mail:

“We have shown for the first time that loss of the filaggrin protein alone is sufficient to alter key proteins and pathways involved in triggering eczema. This research reinforces the importance of filaggrin deficiency leading to problems with the barrier function in the skin and predisposing someone to eczema.”

The study found that those suffering from eczema are missing a vital protein in their skin called filaggrin.

The researchers tested human skin models that were lacking filaggrin, and they found that removing the said protein triggered the same genetic signals as those who have eczema. These included inflammation of the skin, breakdown of cell structure, and stress response. The findings give scientists a better understanding of the condition, and this could mean a cure is possible in the near future.

The condition is believed to affect about three percent of adults around the world. Eczema is more common in children, often developing before they turn one year and often persists into adulthood.

Eczema’s irritating symptoms can also lead to sleep disturbance, infection, and low self-esteem. It can also affect a person’s ability to function at work and in social settings. Eczema sufferers are given steroid creams that can have side effects and can become less effective over time. Natural remedies also help relieve the symptoms.

Are you one of the many people who are suffering from eczema? What do you think of this discovery?
