Earthquake in Manila Causes Water To Spill From Penthouse Pool

It was one scary jolt.

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit Castillejos, Zambales at 5:11 p.m., April 22, 2019. The strong quake was felt across several other provinces and cities, including Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, and even Baguio City.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS)
Officer-in-Charge Renato Solidum said that Intensity 4 was recorded at Pasig, San Juan, Pampanga, and Marikina, while residents in Cavite and Bulacan experienced an Intensity 3 quake.

PHILVOCS reported several aftershocks in Zambales and Pampanga.

Earthquakes are some of the most dangerous natural disasters because it could lead to the destruction of infrastructure and avalanches, landslides, and tsunamis, among others.

The strong quake has caused panic over Metro Manila, leading to people storming out of tall buildings in the area. In one video taken by Michael Rivo, water can be seen spilling from a penthouse pool at the Anchor Skysuites in Binondo, Manila.

The initial measurement of the quake was 5.7 magnitude, but after confirmations by PHIVOLCS, the official reading is 6.1 magnitude. The magnitude of an earthquake measures the energy released at the source of the earthquake.

It is usually identified from seismographic measurements. On the other hand, the intensity measures the shaking strength created by the earthquake at a certain location. The farther you are from the source, the lower the intensity of the jolt.

In case of an earthquake, people should take cover under a desk or table and hold on. Stay inside until the shaking stops or when you’re sure it’s already safe to go out. Do not go near heavy furniture such as bookshelves because they might fall on you.

If you’re in a swimming pool, stay away from the pool ends and sides until the shaking stops. Make sure the waves have subsided enough to evacuate safely.
