Scientists Have Discovered a Seaweed that Tastes Like Bacon But Much Healthier!

Oregon State researchers have just discovered a bacon-like seaweed!

We all love bacon. I would gladly have bacons any day than, say, seaweeds. The only problem here, of course, is that we all know that the latter is much healthier to consume than the former.

So what if I tell you that there is a certain type of seaweed that tastes exactly just like those meaty strips? Would you switch sides in favor of the healthier alternative?

Yes, Oregon State University researchers have discovered a particular seaweed that’s as yummy as the bacon once it is cooked.

Chris Langdon, one of the researches said that his team was working on finding a food source for sea snails when they accidentally stumbled upon the discovery.

"Goodbye, bacons?" This new seaweed is just as yummy but is clearly the healthier choice.

While in the process of studying it, Chuck Toombs, another researcher noticed the seaweed and thought it has “the potential for a new industry in Oregon.” Although common in Northern Europe, red algae are not usually grown and sold in the US for human consumption.

Imagine their delight when the duo found out how delicious it is after they cooked the seaweed!

Not only is it extremely tasty, this red algae also grows very rapidly…

…and has twice the nutritional value of kale.

Langdon exclaimed:

“This stuff is pretty amazing. When you fry it, which I have done, it tastes like bacon, not seaweed. And it’s a pretty strong bacon flavor.”

Toombs immediately tapped the Food Innovation Center of OSU so they can come up with a line of specialty foods using the seaweed as the main ingredient. As of the moment though, the team is not yet in the process of commercializing the red algae. Still, the team highly recommends this to vegetarians wanting to enjoy a delicious but guilt-free food.
