How To Give Your Staircase A Cool DIY Make-Over in 12 Awesome Steps!

I love reading as much as I love writing. I love the feeling of holding a book in my hands, as its spine rests on my palm, and the crisp smell of the paper as I turn each page. Among all the books that I have read, I have a few favorites – some of which I plan on reading again should I have some free time. Since I don’t have much time to spare recently, I am okay with looking at the books that are sitting on my bookshelf for now, calmly waiting for me to pick them up.

However, for those bookworms out there who are not satisfied with keeping their books on bookshelves, and who wish to see more of their favorite books, today is your lucky day! Here is a DIY project that can transform your staircase (yes, you read that right) into a huge bookshelf. But you have to be ready to sacrifice your carpet for something more creative and original. If you’re willing to do that, read on.

Before you start working on anything, you must first choose which books to include. This part of the planning process is essential because this step will let you decide on the colors and materials that you’ll need. Once you finish choosing books, you’re ready to start!

Here’s how you can transform your stairs in 12 steps:

Step 1: Rip your carpet out!

I suggest you watch this video if you want to find out how to do this step properly. Remember to be careful! Don’t injure yourself.

Step 2: Gather all the necessary paint supplies.

Choose the colors that you want to use. Four-ounce tubes of acrylic paint should be enough. Make sure to buy two tubes of off-white acrylic paint.

Step 3: Don’t forget your acryic sealant.

Make sure that you grab an acrylic sealant on your way to the nearest craft shop. You’ll need to paint a layer of sealant over each step to protect the paint from the daily wear and tear. Painting the steps with sealant will also allow you to wash off any scruff marks.

Step 4: Choose which book goes here and there.

Choose a color for each step, and decide where each book should go.

Step 5: Start painting, beginning with the base coat.

Once you’ve finished deciding which is which, start painting! Begin with the base coat and color your way with each step.

Step 6: Let the paint sit overnight.

Don’t forget to give the risers two coats of paint. Once you’re finished, let the paint sit overnight to allow it to dry.

Step 7: Start painting the titles.

The trick here is to make sure that the text is properly centered. You wouldn’t want to accidentally write too far left or too far right, right? What you can do is measure the width of the steps and mark the center with a tiny dot using a pencil. If your steps measure 40 inches across, then you should place the dot at the 20-inch mark.

Step 8: Be careful with the letters.

Make sure that each letter and each space is the same size. Count the letters in each title and make sure that it will look even.

Step 9: Add those extra designs.

Add extra designs on the ‘spines.’ Of course, these designs will depend on the books that you’ve chosen.

Step 10: Play around with the designs.

Add your own designs here and there.

Step 11: Individualize your bookshelf!
