Denmark Government Buys Remaining Circus Elephants To Let Them Retire

These elephants can now enjoy the rest of their lives in peace!

Denmark is making sure that all circus animals will finally get to live a life in peace.
The government decided to purchase the country’s last circus elephants so they could be free.
The elephants are then expected to live in a sanctuary where they can enjoy the rest of their days.

The life of a circus elephant isn’t easy. However, Denmark is determined to make it better for the remaining circus elephants in the country. The government has chosen to buy the four elephants from the circus and will be allowing the animals to retire.

Denmark still has four elephants who have worked in a circus for most of their lives. However, the government decided to purchase the elephants for 11 million kroner (around $1.6 million) in an effort to help the animals leave their hard-working life behind. The elephants are then expected to live out the rest of their lives in an establishment where they don’t have to worry about being put to work.

The four elephants will get to live freely after the purchase.

The four elephants have been named Ramboline, Lara, Djunga and Jenny. Although it is unclear where they will be taken after the purchase, the government assures that the animals will get to enjoy the rest of their lives in peace.

Denmark’s move is in line with the Wild Animals in Circuses Bill that was announced by the UK’s former Environment Secretary Michael Gove.

“Travelling circuses are no place for wild animals in the 21st century and I am pleased that this legislation will put an end to this practice for good,” Gove said in a statement. “Today’s announcement follows other measures we have taken to strengthen our position as a world leader on animal protection. This includes our ban on ivory sales to protect elephants, and delivering Finn’s Law to strengthen the protection of service animals.”
