Grim Milestone: Covid-19 Surpasses 3 Million Deaths Across The World

“Around the world, cases and deaths are continuing to increase at worrying rates,” according to WHO.

  • According to Johns Hopkins University, Covid-19 has claimed 3 million deaths globally.
  • United States has the most deaths with more than 560,000 deaths while Brazil continues to be among the most badly-hit countries.
  • “Around the world, cases and deaths are continuing to increase at worrying rates,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

After more than a year into the pandemic, the dreaded Covid-19 has already claimed more than 3 million lives across the world, official reports said.

The data has been gathered by Johns Hopkins University and according to them, the United States has the most number of deaths with over 566,000. Meanwhile, Brazil continues to be the worst-hit country topping 3,000 deaths a day at one point.

Unfortunately, the nightmare may still be far from over.

“Around the world, cases and deaths are continuing to increase at worrying rates,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, in a recent press briefing. “Globally, the number of new cases per week has nearly doubled over the past two months. This is approaching the highest rate of infection that we have seen so far during the pandemic.”

While vaccination efforts are in full swing in many countries, it may not be enough to stop the spread of the virus right away.

As University of Geneva’s Institute of Global Health director Antoine Flahault pointed out:

“We are in a race with our vaccine campaign, but it might be a profound error to think that we can win the competition against the pandemic just by vaccinating people. At least in the countries which have succeeded to contain the viral circulation at the lowest possible level, vaccines will make people feel safe in their social and economic activities.”

He likewise added that some countries “may suffer much longer from attacks of new variants, because they allow them to circulate and develop.”

“This is not the situation we want to be in 16 months into a pandemic, where we have proven control measures,” summed up Maria Van Kerkhove of WHO.
