Amazing Chinese Artist Paints Super-Realistic Images

"He is so accurate at mixing the colors and knowing where to put each stroke."

  • Chinese artist Leng Jun is known for his lifelike artwork that looks more like photographs than paintings.
  • Because of his amazing skill, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Birmingham City University.
  • In 2017, Jun performed a live painting demonstration in the Wright Gallery on the Texas A&M University campus.

Leng Jun has established a reputation for his hyperrealistic art style. He is born in 1963 in Sichuan. A fine arts graduate from the Hankou Branch of Wuhan Normal College, he is presently a Beijing resident.

The influential Chinese contemporary artist creates paintings that those who see the pieces couldn’t help but use a magnifying glass to check out the meticulous details. His work has been recognized not only in China but also in many parts of the world.

Birmingham City University awarded Leng Jun an honorary doctorate last year.

A university spokesperson shared:

“His artistic process relies entirely on sketching, rather than photographs, ensuring that every work is vivid and intriguing in its visual effect, capturing the minutest details.”

Leng’s style has been described as “paintings that are beyond limits” by scholars because his artistry exceeded the expression of oil paint material.

Leng quoted Confucius to explain his art, “Let the will be set on the path of duty. Let every attainment of what is good be firmly grasped. Let perfect virtue be emulated. Let relaxation and enjoyment be found in the arts.”

Back in 2017, Jun performed a live painting demonstration in front of an audience in the Wright Gallery on the Texas A&M University campus. He created a portrait of visualization major Bailee Wilson that took him nine hours to finish.

Associate professor Yu Xiao, who sponsored Leng’s visit, said she wanted students to experience how a masterpiece is made live. She shared that Leng is so accurate with every stroke.
