Man Left Clinging For His Life After 330ft-High Glass Bridge Breaks In China

One tourist’s trip to a 330-feet-high bridge in a resort in the Jilin Province suddenly turned to nightmare when a rough gale broke the glass panels. Apparently, the Piyan Mountain bridge was hit by winds reaching over 150km per hour, which led to the terrifying incident last Friday, May 5.

Photos later made rounds on China’s Weibo app, showing a man stranded on the bridge. The images earned numerous views and comments from netizens. “This is exactly why I dare not step on a bridge like that,” someone said.

Meanwhile, the man whose identity remained undisclosed, was later guided to safety by the on-site staff. He was able to crawl back and was immediately brought to the hospital for observation and psychological counselling. He is now in a “stable emotional and physical condition.”

In a statement issued to the media, officials shared:

“There were no casualties. After being kept in the hospital for observation, the trapped person was in stable emotional and physical condition and has been discharged from the hospital.”

Longjing City’s Weibo page eventually announced that the resort has been temporarily closed. Investigations are also ongoing at the moment.

It is, of course, worth-noting that this is not the first accident involving glass bridges in China. Back in 2016, a tourist ended up with injuries after getting hit by falling rocks while on Zhangjiaje city’s glass walkway. In 2019, an incident in the province of Guangxi left one person dead and six others injured after falling off a slippery glass slide.

China has at least 60 glass-deck bridges, according to state-run media Xinhua News Agency.

“So many glass deck bridges have been built in recent years and are very popular with tourists. But how can we ensure their safety?” a netizen asked.
