Company Claims This Chainless Bicycle Is The “World’s Most Efficient” Bike

This chain-free bike “sets a new benchmark in drivetrain technology, increasing optimal efficiency to 99%,” according to CeramicSpeed.

How do you improve a great invention like the bicycle? For one company, it means removing its chains.

CeramicSpeed, a manufacturer of bicycle parts, has teamed up with the Mechanical Engineering Department of the University of Colorado to create an innovative bike that’s being marketed as the “world’s most efficient.”

How does the bike exactly work, you ask? And how is it different from a regular bicycle, apart from being chainless?

Well the official CeramicSpeed website tells us that Driven “sets a new benchmark in drivetrain technology, increasing optimal efficiency to 99% and creating 49% less friction than market leaders.”

Unlike other drivetrain systems, this new tech removes friction “caused by the articulation of a chain due to it’s innovative pinion drive shaft design.”

Or as Jason Smith, chief technology officer of CeramicSpeed, puts it: They made the bicycle aiming “to create a drivetrain that only had one-percent frictional losses.”

Driven is equipped with 21 hybrid bearings by CeramicSpeed.

Every bearing comes with unique ceramic balls that are “58% lighter and 2.3 times harder than traditional steel, increasing the speed of the bearing by 30-50%.”

Currently, Driven is still under development and doesn’t have a release date yet.

So yeah, don’t expect to see this bike in the market anytime soon as it is still a work in progress. Still, its impressive to know that Driven has already won the Eurobike Award, “a competition that included 365 other entrants” reported Maxim.

As for now, you can check out the video below for more details about the chainless Driven drivetrain bike:
