Bobbi McCaughey and her husband Kenny went through fertility treatment to have more babies. The couple from Des Moines, Iowa already had a daughter before they decided to go for the treatment. It was a success; Bobbi became pregnant with SEVEN babies, but the doctors advised her to terminate four of them since there are massive risks involved in carrying multiple babies.

The couple refused even though she was told that selective termination will increase the chances of the remaining babies to survive. They chose to keep all seven babies and Bobbi was able to carry all of them to term.

However, the risks were indeed there. Most of the babies weighed just a little over two pounds, too low for the survival of premature babies. Still, the couple fought hard for their kids and thankfully all of them survived.

Of course, the problem didn’t end there. Two of the kids had cerebral palsy. One of these two had severe acid reflux, which was also evident with another child. These required the use of feeding tubes just to keep them alive.

Other people’s reactions towards the couple’s decision to keep the family are mixed. They got donations, which included a family van and college scholarships. A lot questioned their decision to keep a large brood, with some saying that the family is wasting the world’s resources. There are some who actually called the couple selfish for refusing the doctor’s advise to reduce the babies.

Thankfully, all children did all right. They graduated from high school, with two of them choosing to stay in town and study at Des Moines Area Community College.

Four of the children are set to attend Hannibal-LaGrange University in Missouri on scholarships. One of them enlisted with the U.S. Army.
