Blind Elderly and His Armless Friend Planted Over 10,000 Trees in China

This dynamic duo proved disability is not a hindrance to make the world a better place.

Who would have thought that the tree-filled Yeli Village in northeastern China was once a barren land 12 years ago?

It must have been a pretty tough job for the people behind the rehabilitation of the once-barren environment.

But the dynamic duo of a blind elderly and his armless friend proved that disability is not a hindrance to make the world a better place.

Jia Haixia, a blind elderly man, and his friend Jia Wenqi, a double amputee with no arms, spent more than 10 years planting over 10,000 trees in the 8 acres of land leased by the government. Their hard work and dedication not only preserved the land, but also protected the village from flooding.

Born with congenital cataracts that left his left eye blind, Haixia lost his other eye during an accident at work in 2000, making him completely blind. Meanwhile, Wenqi’s two arms were amputated after an accident when he was 3 years old.

With no secure jobs available for them, the two friends decided to lease over eight acres of land near the riverbank from the local government in order to plant trees. The tree-planting duo earned sufficient income from the government funding while also transforming their village.

Despite their disabilities, these dynamic duo were able to plant more than 10,000 trees in China.
