Bill Gates Wants To Dim The Sun – And It Could Happen Soon!

Scientists say it could be a solution to global warming. Others, however, remain skeptical!

  • Microsoft founder Bill Gates is helping fund a project that aims to decrease global warming.
  • Harvard University’s Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx) will attempt to spray calcium carbonate dust to deflect sun rays to protect our planet.
  • Others, however, remain skeptical about the technology and claim it could cause more harm than good.

It may sound like a plot for a sci-fi flick but no, it’s really happening. As several reports have confirmed, Bill Gates is currently funding a project that aims to lessen the impact of global warming – by dimming the sun.

In fact, scientists from the Harvard University are working on the proposed solution and the 63-year-old billionaire is supporting it all the way. The initial plan, of course, is to send 2 kilograms of calcium carbonate dust above our planet’s surface in order to form a sunshade that will deflect rays from the sun, therefore reducing the harmful effects of global warming.

The said project is called Stratospheric Controlled Perturbation Experiment (SCoPEx).

An article by the Daily Mail pointed out that actually, “sky-clouding” experiments were supposed to begin several months ago but was pushed back and out on hold at the moment.

The first SCoPEx test is expected to cost about $3 million and would require the use of a high-altitude balloon “to lift an instrument package approximately 20 km into the atmosphere,” said the official website of Harvard University.

Once proven successful, we could expect to see more of these dusts sprayed above our planet in the near future.

However, not everyone is feeling optimistic about the technology as some are afraid it may result to ozone later damage. If that happens, we’ll have lesser protection from harmful ultraviolet radiation. This can cause cancers and could claim millions of lives. It may also trigger natural calamities such as droughts, hurricanes, and others.

Lizzie Burns, director of the team from Harvard, admitted:

“Our idea is terrifying… But so is climate change.”

Is the SCoPEx really the right solution for global warming and climate change?

For now, we don’t really know for sure but we’re all going to find out soon.
