Doctors say his birth was rare and a miracle.

Miracles don’t happen every day. But when they do, it’s sure to astonish you and leave you in awe.
Such was the reaction of the health care staff who helped Chelsea Phillips give birth. The reason? Her son, whom she named Silas, was born at 26 weeks via Cesarean section, three months premature, with his amniotic sac amazingly intact. He was in a fetal position, with the placenta and his umbilical cord tucked inside the water bag.
Silas was still receiving oxygen through the placenta until the sac was broken. The health care team had to work fast to get him out of the sac and help him breathe.
Dr. William Binder, a neonatologist who helped deliver Silas, said that this is a medical rarity. They quickly snapped a photo of Silas’ first seconds of extrauterine life, and described it as “a moment of awe” as they held their breath.
The doctors say that Silas, who is now 10 weeks old, is doing so well that he can go home in under a month.
