Artist Creates Alien-Inspired Facehugger Face Mask

Very effective for social distancing.

  • James meticulously crafted a face covering that looks just like the Facehugger, the slimy creature from the Alien movie.
  • The leather mask is composed of 59 pieces of parts painstakingly sewn together to resemble the terrifying creature.
  • It took him three days to create the first version of the mask and used 2-3 square feet of leather to finish it.

Wearing mask is definitely a must during these pandemic times and this necessity produced masks of different materials and designs. Now some people took mask-wearing to a different level, such as this artist from the UK who created a mask that will not only protect him but also make other people keep their distance from him, in a good way.

James of Pirate’s Leatherworks decided to have fun with his mask since wearing one became mandatory in the UK. Taking inspiration from the 1979 sci-fi and horror movie Alien, James meticulously crafted a face covering that looks just like the Facehugger, the alien creature from the movie.

The leather mask is composed of 59 pieces of parts painstakingly sewn together to resemble the terrifying creature.
The real Facehugger from the movie Alien:
The detailing is nothing short of excellent – the leg joints, the curvature of the skin, and the scales, all look realistic, save for the color.
The leather is brown while the Facehugger in the film has a pale skin tone that looks slimy.

James made the mask using a pattern he found on Etsy. Normally, he wouldn’t use bought patterns especially since he is a professional leather worker and carver. But he found the look so good that he shelled out £14 for it just to make the mask.

“I saw it and thought that it’s for me and I could have a laugh walking around the local supermarket with it on,” he joked.

It took him three days to create the first version of the mask and used 2-3 square feet of leather to finish it.
The later versions came in easier and they were made in just two days.

“In total, you’re looking at around 2–3 square feet of leather for each one. I’ve priced them to sell on my Etsy shop for £130 each (around $170), as I buy a pattern for each one I make (so that the designer gets something out of it too) and I’ve managed to get them down to two days per mask to make,” James explained.

He said that a lot of people found his creation too expensive, but he explained that if he will charge according to his hourly rate as a craftsman, the price would actually double. So he made himself work on a cheaper rate so he can get orders and to be able to compete with people creating the stuff as a hobby rather than a living.

Other people have made their own versions of Facehugger masks as well.

Aside from this, James has many other awesome leather creations which include bags, belts, wallets, book covers, journals, and a few other household items. He has these on his Etsy store and he also showcases his works on Instagram and Facebook.
