Algar de Benagil or the Benagil Sea Cave attracts people from all over the globe. It is a spacious, airy cavern perfect for tourists and photographers.

It is located east of Benagil beach, along the stunning Algarve coastline.
The huge littoral cave has two entrances adjacently situated and facing the clear waters.
On top is a hole, known as ‘the eye,’ through which the sun lights the limestone rocks formed about 20 million years ago.
Consequently, the sun, blue skies, golden sands, and turquoise waters contribute to changing pallete of ethereal colors. It’s seen best during mid-mornings or late afternoons.
Also found inside this remarkable cave is its own ‘indoor beach.’
Tourists can wander around the beach on foot. However, the inside of Benagil Cave can only be accessed by boat, kayak, paddleboard, or if you prefer, swimming.

Those who are already in the beach can walk a flight of stairs down to sea level, where there are fishermen boats waiting to take you on a tour.

According to Iberian Escapes, it is best to visit the Benagil Sea Cave during spring and fall. Tourists can also arrange a boat tour, but should go as early as possible to avoid a large influx of people coming to the cave.

Several boat trips departing from different regions in Algarve are available. Furthermore, there are a number of boat tours from Carvoeiro and Portimao. Those who want to see other caves and the cliffs along the coastline may inquire there. The costs vary depending on your itinerary and the season but keep in mind that these tours won’t allow you to get off and stay long enough to explore the entire cave.
