Aethelflaed: The Last Kingdom’s Warrior Queen Who Conquered The Vikings

The Lady of Mercians was able to bring the Northmen to heel but her name has somehow been forgotten in most history books.

It takes a strong woman to break the glass ceiling. Aethelflaed was a woman ahead of her time as she rallied the Mercian army to defeat Viking invaders. However, Alfred the Great’s brave daughter is usually left out from the history books. Nevertheless, the powerful portrayal of the Warrior Queen in The Last Kingdom could shed light on Aethelflaed’s contribution to England.

Aethelflaed grew up at a time when her father Alfred the Great was struggling with the Viking invasion. Her rough childhood allowed her to be independent and wise about using her power. She married Aethelred to unite Wessex and Mercia then immediately joined her husband in the fight against the Northmen. She took part in treaties and military campaigns although she was a woman.

The Lady of the Mercians is depicted as a powerful ruler who led her army to defeat the Norsemen who invaded England.

It wasn’t an easy job but Aethelflaed and Aethelred managed to take England back little by little. The Warrior Queen was by her husband’s side when they fought the Vikings at the Battle of Wednesfield. After Aethelred’s death, she became a true ruler and was named the Lady of the Mercians.

Aethelflaed demonstrated her power by refusing to remarry. She single-handedly forced the Viking invaders in Derby, Leicester, and York to follow her command. Still, history favors a powerful male ruler so she was pushed aside from most books. Nevertheless, Aethelflaed’s story inspires women of younger generations to always stand their ground.

Millie Brady portrays Aethelflaed in ‘The Last Kingdom’ where the Lady of the Mercians is expected to rise to power in Season 3.

Aethelflaed appears in the BBC 2 series The Last Kingdom, which is based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories. The character will play a major role in the show now that Netflix has confirmed a third season.

Gloucester has not forgotten about the Lady of the Mercians. The city recently celebrated the 1,100 anniversary of Aethelflaed’s death.

Watch as thousands of people honor the late ruler in an amazing mock funeral procession around Gloucester.
