A Casket Becomes Yearbook as Tribute for A Student Who Lost Her Battle With Cancer

She Passed Away Before Getting A Yearbook, So Her Classmates and Family Did Something Beautiful and Touching.

Cancer is a severe illness that must be treated right away; staging describes the severity of cancer.

There are times that treatments succeed and other times, it fails.

It’s always vital to be able to detect cancer early, although at times there are no obvious symptoms at the early stages of it. It’s best to have yourself checked regularly for prevention.

Fighting with cancer is a very complex journey; it is painful, exhausting and very expensive. People who are battling with these illnesses need upmost support emotionally, physically and financially.

Laura Hillier is a senior High School in Ontario, Canada who loves theater and music. She was diagnosed with cancer, acute myeloid leukemia when she was 13 but was able to successfully fight cancer and was cleared for four years until it came back.

She was placed on the donor’s list for stem cell therapy and they found a match for her but sadly, because of hospital bed shortages her treatment kept getting interrupted. She also undergone chemotherapy as treatment for her cancer.

She sadly passed away at the age of 18 on January 20, 2016

On January 20, 2016, Laura lost her battle with cancer. Her parents posted details about her death in her Hope for Laura Facebook page. Her parents posted,

“She fought bravely and all of you would have been so proud of her. Her poise, her courage, her strength and her pure spirit shone through right until the end.”

The funeral was held last January 30 and her friends as well as family, wanted to make it very special by writing on the surface of her casket using colorful markers. Family and friends wrote their final messages for her like a yearbook send off since she was not able to graduate and experience passing yearbook at the end of graduation. People began writing touching messages and goodbyes to Laura.

Her friends and families came together to turn her casket into a yearbook.

Heartfelt notes handwritten on the casket can be seen, as they couldn't sign her yearbook and decided to do this as final goodbye.

It’s heartbreaking that some people lose their battle with cancer especially for young patients like Laura Hillier who has a very bright future waiting for her. Laura will always be remembered by her family and friends; she fought cancer bravely and has been an inspiration to many people.
