68-Year-Old Nigerian Woman Gives Birth To Twins After 46 Years Of Trying To Have Children

Dreams do come true, even for the oldies.

  • Margaret Adenuga, 68, and husband Noah Adenuga, 77, finally fulfilled their dreams of becoming parents.
  • After 46 years of marriage and three unsuccessful attemptsto conceive via IVF, the two became first-time parents to a twin boy and girl.
  • It may symbolize hope for the other couples who are trying to conceive, but Adenuga’s doctor shared that not everyone can be as lucky as these two.

A 68-year-old woman from Lagos, Nigeria finally experienced the joys of motherhood, after giving birth to twins, a boy and a girl. Margaret Adenuga had been married for 46 years and had gone through three in-vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts before she finally conceived.

Her husband, 77-year-old Noah Adenuga, shared that they never lost hopes of having children of their own despite the failed attempts.

The pair first began trying for a baby after getting married in 1974.

Since they were married in 1974, the two have dreamed of having their own children. Noah, a retired stock auditor, particularly shared how it has been his dream for so long.

“I am a dreamer, and I was convinced this particular dream of ours will come to pass.”

The babies were born at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH).

The babies were delivered via Caesarean section at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) with Dr. Adeyemi Okunowo helping hthe mother deliver the babies.

Okunowo also shared that a team was assembled to monitor the pregnancy until it reached full-term because Adenuga was a high-risk case.

“As an elderly woman and a first-time mother, it was a high-risk pregnancy and also because she was going to have twins but we were able to manage her pregnancy to term,” says Okunowo in an interview with CNN.

He also shared that while Adenuga may symbolize hope for those who are trying to conceive, IVF in old age is not advisable. It comes with higher medical risks during and even after birth. Okunowo also said that it is the doctor’s responsibility to ensure that would-be mothers understand the risks associated in such circumstances.

“There are age-related medical complications that come with being pregnant at that age such as the baby being born preterm. She’s lucky but many may succumb to other complications during or after having a baby,” he explained.
