5 Reasons Why Your Breath is Bad Behind That Face Mask and How to Solve It

Coffee, sugar, and even medications are only some of the culprits!

Curiously, a lot of people were not aware of how their breath smell like until the pandemic when they were forced to put a face mask on. Suddenly, they became conscious of how unpleasant their breath is behind the mask.

Bad breath, or halitosis, is actually quite common. Around 80 million people suffer from chronic bad breath. The thing is, if you can smell your stinky breath while wearing a mask, then it is actually that bad.

You may not be aware that you have offensive breath.

Not only can bad breath have repercussions on your social life, it can also serve as a sign of diseases and conditions that you are not aware – of and some of they may be serious.

Here are the top reasons why a person can develop stink breath and what can be done about it.

#1. Poor brushing habits

This is the leading cause of stinky breath. Surprisingly, there are lots of people who don’t brush their teeth at least twice a day. Brushing removes the food stuck between your teeth and under your gums. Trapped food particles leads to more bacteria, which results to putrid gases that smell like rotten eggs – or even poop.

You can check the state of your breath by flossing your teeth and the nsmelling the thread. if the thread smells bad, it means you probably have bad breath.

This is why brushing teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly is very important for dental health. Brush your tongue and cheeks as well, since bacteria can stick in those places as well.

#2. Smelly diet

The type of food that you eat also contributes to the quality of your breath, not just by stinking up your mouth, but actually residing in your system. Food that releases sulfur has allyl methyl sulfide that can stay in your bloodstream and can affect the smell of your breath up to 72 hours after your meal.

The common culprits are: garlic, fish eggs, onion, coffee, and spicy foods. Most probably, you may not be able to avoid consuming these, but you can balance it by eating food that stimulates saliva production, such as parsley, lemon, carrots, and apples. Make sure to drink loads of water too.

#3. Too much sweets

Sweets not only wreak havoc on your weight loss diet, it can also contribute to bad breath. Sugar actually serves as a superfood for the bacteria that live in your mouth and when they consume sweets, it leads to smelly breath.

If you must temper that sweet tooth, better do so with plain chocolate, which contains less sugar compared to caramels and gummies.

#4. Medications

A lot of medications – such as pills for high blood pressure, depression, anxiety, and pain and muscle tension – can dry out your mouth. As a result, it can also lead to bad breath.

#5. Smoking

This should be a no-brainer by now. The smell of tobacco clings not only on your breath, but also on your clothes, making the smell even more powerful. It’s even worse if you chew tobacco – not only will your breath stink, but your gums will suffer and your teeth will stain.
