5 Different Types of Headaches And The Proper Way To Address Them

A guide to headache types and how to properly manage them.

An estimated half of the adult population experiences a headache at least once in a year. People usually treat headaches by taking painkillers because it seems to be the easiest way to treat the pain. However, headaches come in different types and knowing each one of them can help in properly addressing it.

Knowing what type of headache you’re having is the first step to making you feel much better. This way, you’ll know exactly what you’re dealing with and the appropriate pain relief can then be administered.

Tension headache

This is the most common type of headache that is mostly caused by stress and fatigue. It is usually characterized by mild and non-throbbing pain. It feels as if there’s a band tied tightly around your forehead!

Painkillers are the best way to remedy tension headaches but they must be used occasionally. If a tension headache occurs more frequently and lasts for a long period of time, it’s best to see a doctor.

Hangover

Headache from a hangover is usually an effect of dehydration since drinking can promote water loss by increasing urine production. A hangover is best treated with a painkiller along with drinking lots of water and getting enough rest.

Migraine

Migraines are usually mistaken for tension headaches. The pain in this type of headache is usually throbbing or pulsating and only occurs on one side of your head. Migraine can also be accompanied by nausea and vomiting and can make a person sensitive to noise, smell and light.

Because migraines can have severe symptoms, its treatment should involve prescription medications from your doctor.

Sinusitis

A headache caused by sinusitis, or inflammation of the sinuses, is usually accompanied by fever, facial swelling and tension on the part of the cheekbones and in your forehead. Pain is usually characterized by deep pressure and pain in the forehead area, specifically where your eyebrows are and under the eyes. You might also feel tired and have clogged nose.

Treatment involves taking antihistamines, decongestants and antibiotics. But remember to ask your doctor about using any of those medicines for your sinus infection.

Cluster headaches

This rare type of headache occurs in less than 1% of the population, more commonly in males than females. The pain can be very severe; it is described as an excruciating pain felt around the eyes, which can last for 15 to 180 minutes. It can occur once every day or even eight times a day.

Treatment for this type of headaches involves the use of prescription medicines. At times, oxygen can also be given. Basically, cluster headache treatment can be tricky so it’s best to consult a doctor about the problem.
