  • China just “lifted and moved” a massive 19th-century building from ts original location.
  • 10 trailer-like machines made the transfer possible.
  • The historic building was moved to avoid possible flooding during the rainy season.

Yes, you read that headline right. A massive building weighing 2,600 tons has recently been lifted and moved horizontally in the city of Jinan in the Shandong Province. Unbelievable, you say? Well, you gotta check out the photos below to see for yourself.

According to reports, the said structure is a 3-storey mansion that dates back to the 19th century. 10 trailer-like machines were used to transfer the building to its new location – which is over 70 meters. The “relocation” operation reportedly lasted around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The move became necessary because the original location was prone to flooding during the rainy season.
Ten trailer-like machines were used to make the big move possible.

Erected back in 1893, the historical building has changed its functions multiple times as the years went by. For example, it was once used as a school for women run by the Catholic Church.

Most recently, it has been used as the venue where the test papers for China’s National College Entrance Examinations (known locally as “Gaokao”) get printed.

The building has an overall floor area of 1,700 square meters.

Shandong Jianzhu University professor Zhang Xin said about the structure:

“Besides its architectural features, the stories that the building brings with it, and the local citizens’ love for the building, are all reasons why we must strengthen its protection.”

It should, of course, be noted that this wasn’t the first time China moved a huge building from its location.

In September 2019, the country made it to the Guinness World Records for the longest arc rotation of a pivoted building after horizontally rotating the Houxi Long Distance Bus Station from its original spot in the city of Xiamen. The terminal reportedly weighed 30,000 tons – which is almost the same weight as 170 Boeing 747s.
