A A A

The human body is without a doubt a wonder. The brain is capable of controlling what we do, while the heart keeps us alive. But despite how advanced our technology is, we’re still far from unraveling the mysteries of the human anatomy.

There are just tons of peculiar things about us human beings. And as time goes by, we tend to evolve and change – all depending on the environment around us. While it’s a process that could require millions of years, it can’t be denied that humanity is gradually changing. And believe it or not, part of this change is the inexistence of some of our body parts.

If you think we’re bluffing, then continue reading. Below are some of our body parts that could soon go MIA!

#1. Body Hair

There’s a reason why brows grow. They’re basically there to keep the sweat away from our eyes. But as far as male facial hair is concerned, it’s more about attracting the opposite sex. Scientists, however, suggest that the most hair left on the human body serves little to no function. And it’s no longer a surprise if they begin to disappear in the near future.

#2. Paranasal Sinuses

Source: Wikipedia

No one on earth really knows why these mucus-lined cavities are well-kept in our face. But according to some, they’re there to make our heads lighter. Strange, right?

#3. Extrinsic Ear Muscles

It’s true that there are those who can twitch their ears, but others simply can’t. After all, we’re unlike animals such as rabbits, dogs, and cats that are capable of doing so. This is due to the fact that they have special and exotic-sounding muscles. While humans have them (which also helps people in wiggling their ears), they actually serve no purpose – like at all.

#4. Wisdom Teeth

We all have wisdom teeth – at least at the moment – and they date back from the time when we still had to chew plants in order to gain enough calories to exist. Apparently, though, five percent of the world’s total population has this set of teeth intact. But unbeknownst to them, they’re actually useless. And as evolution continues to become a human thing, its nonexistence in the future is only inevitable.

#5. Neck Rib

Perhaps you’re wondering right now: where do cervical ribs come from and what exactly do they do? They’re believed to be leftover from the age of reptiles, and these bones still exist in one percent of the population. Some people have it on the left, while others have it on the right. There are people, however, who have them on both sides. Unfortunately, though, neck rib causes nerve and artery problem, making them burdensome and useless.

#6. Palmaris Muscle

The palmaris muscle is the one that’s both long and narrow, and it runs from your elbow down to your wrist. Interestingly, this muscle is currently missing on at least 11 percent of human beings. It was once important for activities such as hanging and climbing, but as time goes by, it diminished to a useless muscle.

#7. Male Nipples

Both men and women have nipples. But do you even know how and why they exist? Basically, they occur in the early stages of a person’s fetal development – during the time when an unborn child is still genderless. But while they’re present in both males and females, the former doesn’t really need them as much as the latter. Women basically have them for producing milk.

#8. Arrector Pili Muscles

For animals, the arrector pili muscles allow them to puff their fur to produce heat. There are those, though, that use them to intimidate others. As far as the human beings are concerned, we notice them whenever experience goosebumps. This happens thanks to tiny muscles which we actually don’t need. Why? Because of all living things, we’re less hairy.

#9. Appendix

The appendix is the (redundant) muscular tube that is attached to our much larger intestine. Before, it helped human beings to digest plants when diets were more based on this kind of food. Apparently these days, we don’t eat as many plants as we do in the archaic times. This automatically leaves the appendix unnecessary and, unfortunately, prone to infections.

#10. Thirteenth Rib

For those who had no idea, we human beings actually have flying bones – or commonly referred to as the thirteenth rib. Eight percent of the adults in the world have 13 ribs instead of the usual 12. And believe it or not, humanity’s closest friends – the gorillas and chimpanzees – also have these extra set of ribs.

#11. Toes

According to modern research, humans used to run and walk using the midline of their feet. But as time changed, humanity learned to balance more toward the side of the bigger toe. Apparently, the same study suggests that the center of balance continues to move inward. To put it simply, human beings won’t rely on their toes for balance in the coming future.

#12. Coccyx

Source: Spine Health

Also known as the tailbone, the coccyx is all humans have left as tails. Keep in mind that most mammals have tails, which are used for balance and communication. And as history and science state, the coccyx is a clear indication that humanity once had a tail.

#13. Third Eyelid

Source: BakLOL

If you haven’t noticed yet, we only retain a tiny fold in the inner corner of our eyes. This is actually believed to be the third eyelid, which existed in the past. And since humanity no longer needs it, it’s gradually becoming smaller. It would soon disappear from our anatomy.

#14. Darwin’s Point

Source: Ideonexus

This one here is basically the folded point of skin on the human ear. While it’s found in most people, not everyone has this. It’s said to be a remnant of a much larger shape that helped in focusing distant sounds.

#15. Subclavius Muscle

This is the small muscle on our back that stretches from under the shoulder, particularly from the first rib, all the way to the collarbone. If only humans were still walking on fours, this muscle would’ve been very useful. But we aren’t, so it’s only right for it to go away. Apparently, there are people who have two of these muscles on their body.
