Grandmothers are the best friends we hope we could keep forever. They are wise, straightforward and truly loving. Obviously, they’ve lived longer than us and so they have a lot of experiences and wisdom to share with us.

In the story below, a grandmother showed her granddaughter how the same level of adversity can change a person and thus made us think how we are as problem solvers. Take a read for it sure is going to be worth it.

One day, a young woman came to visit her grandmother. She gladly shared stories about her life, particularly how her husband cheated on her, which put her in great misery. She did not know how to go forward in her life anymore and is already thinking of giving up as she has grown tired of fighting. Nothing in her life seems to be working as one after another problem occurs.

The grandmother listened well and when her granddaughter had finished talking, she brought her to the kitchen, the grandmother set three pots with water on fire. When it came to a boil, she placed carrots on the first pan, an egg on the second and coffee beans on the third.

After 20 minutes, she turned the gas stove off and prepared the food items on the table. She then asked her granddaughter: “What do you see?”

The granddaughter simply replied, “Carrot, egg and coffee.”

The grandmother then asked her granddaughter to look closely an feel/taste each food item. The granddaughter noted that the carrot became soft, the egg turned hard and the coffee beans transformed into a rich and aromatic coffee.

“What does this mean, grandma?” she asked.

The grandmother then explained that each of the food item underwent the same challenging trial: boiling water. However, the three reacted differently thus producing varying end results. First, the carrot initially looked hard and and strong but when it was placed in boiling water, it turned soft and weak. Second, the egg looked fragile at first, with its liquid content supported by its hard shell, but when subjected to the challenge, it turned to a hard-boiled egg. Lastly, the coffee blended with the water and actually transformed it into a completely new item.

“Which are you?” she asked her granddaughter. “When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Let’s think about the scenario:

Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity? Do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain.. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest, do you elevate yourself to another level?

How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don’t necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can’t go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so at the end, you’re the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

When life gets hard and challenges just won’t seem to stop, pause for a moment, rethink, revitalize. Problems exist to test us and make us stronger. It is not about how difficult the obstacle is, it is about finishing and controlling the pace and outcome of the obstacle. Don’t let difficult moments bring you down; carry them with pride and find a way to change them into a learning experience, a stepping stone to success or a reason for you to look back and realize that you are one tough super human!

So, are you the carrot, the egg or the coffee?
